Two Myths About Salt Water Pools

Salt water pools are a popular alternative to traditional chlorine treated pools, but are they actually better for you? We explain two common myths about salt water pools.

Salt water pools are chlorine-free/chemical free.

False. Salt water pools contain chlorine, just like any normally chlorinated pool. The chlorine is produced by the process of electrolysis as the salt water passes over the low voltage plates in the chlorine generator cell. Muriatic acid is also used to lower the pH of the water just like a normally chlorinated pool.

Salt water pools are better for the human body.

False. There is no research to support the claim that salt water pools are better for you than swimming in a normally chlorinated pool. The salt makes the body more buoyant and the water feels silky because of the salt, but the sensation does not equate to good health, necessarily. The salt added to the water in residential pools is similar to regular table salt (NaCl) and this type of salt is not used for mineral baths or therapy. Epson salt (magnesium sulfate) is used for soakers looking for minerals to enhance their health.
